PROJECT / COMMERCIAL

900 19th Street NW

Located at the intersection of Eye Street and 19th Street in downtown Washington D.C., this project reimagines the structure, façade, and entry of a building that was reaching the end of its usable life.

The under-performing granite façade was removed and replaced with a high-performance curtainwall system, and the slab was extended at setbacks to create a pure geometric form. Each unitized curtainwall panel is hung on the extended slab edge and joined to the next with a white-painted aluminum channel that emphasizes the building’s horizontal relationships with its neighbors. Slab infills and structural reinforcement throughout the building allowed for a new double-height entry and column-free corner.

Bright and Airy

The most dramatic change to this building is the entry. Replacing the once dark, one-story entry is a bright, two-story entry made of clear glass and a variety of white finishes. The new column-free corner emphasizes the cube-like quality of the space. With a floor of pure Caldia marble, the glowing cube welcomes visitors and opens to a lobby clad in warm, polyester-finished sycamore.
