PROJECT / MASTER PLANNING

THE PENN DISTRICT

Anchored by the largest public transportation hub in the Western world, Penn Station, the master plan for THE PENN DISTRICT envisions the station and its surrounding environs as a dynamic urban neighborhood distinguished by world-class office space, entertainment, and public activity. As the catalyst for the transformation of the district, MdeAS reimagines PENN 1 and PENN 2 as a connected campus that models the future of the workplace. The partial closing of West 33rd Street to become Plaza 33 provides a connection between the two buildings and a generous contribution to the public realm.

PENN 1

PENN 1 has undergone a major transformation to redefine the future of work, public space, and connection to transportation within THE PENN DISTRICT. MdeAS served as the executive architect for the project with a focus on enhancing the 55-story tower’s facade, expanding the base of the building, and enhancing the surrounding public plazas. Combined with interior architecture by A+I and landscape architecture by MNLA, the result is a sleek, modern building that seamlessly blends state-of-the-art technology with luxurious amenities to create an unparalleled user experience.

PENN 2

Positioned directly in front of Madison Square Garden on the site of what was once the original Pennsylvania Station, the repositioning of this 1960s office building breathes new life into the gateway of Seventh Avenue and New York City. PENN 2 is the exemplar of a mixed-use urban center. Its dynamic composition incorporates transportation, entertainment, exterior activation, and collaborative workspace to create a balanced exchange of activities and commerce. Recycling the existing structure minimizes waste and preserves embodied carbon while providing the opportunity to create a new, fully sustainable building. The new PENN 2 is monumental within the district yet human-scaled in its function through purposeful design and selection of materials.
