Dan Shannon Speaks at Facade Tectonics New York Forum

Why can’t all buildings be new? Why do clients choose to renovate rather than build new? What are the consequences of emerging curtainwall technology?

MdeAS Partner, Dan Shannon, explored these increasingly relevant topics at Façade Tectonics’ 2019 New York Forum held on November 5, 2019. The seminar consisted of three expert-led discussions surrounding the issues, trends and innovative practices in New York City’s built environment.

Dan joined David Bellman of Vornado Reality Trust and Chris Haber of W&W Glass, LLC to discuss “Skin-Deep Renovation- The Challenge of New York City’s Tall Curtainwall Building Renewal.” Moderated by Mic Patterson, the panelists examined the benefits of restoring existing buildings versus building new structures and the various design techniques available for redevelopment projects.

“Technology with glass has exploded in the last decade and architects, owners, engineers, and fabricators have taken advantage of that. They have driven the look and performance of new buildings today. It has made some of the old buildings look outdated, outmoded and underperforming,” Dan explained. “Why can’t all buildings be new? Because sometimes they are filled with people, sometimes because of current zoning, and sometimes because the buildings have distinctive qualities that can’t be replaced.”

In renovating existing buildings, MdeAS’ goals are to:

  • Minimize tenant disruption

  • Reduce carbon footprint

  • Create a better workplace

  • Improve energy performance

  • Preserve zoning area

  • Reinvigorate urban streetscape

  • Minimize construction duration

  • Revitalize the development

The Façade Tectonics Regional Forum brought together key figures in the industry, allowing for a well-rounded discussion on the revitalization of buildings and the commitment to providing the best possible solutions to today’s façade challenges.
