PROJECT / CULTURAL & URBAN SPACES

3 Bryant Park + The Cubes

Comprising three occupied floors and approximately 23,000 square feet of above-grade retail with an additional 55,000 square feet of below-grade retail space, The Cubes was conceived as a Jewel Box icon to flank the western edge of the plaza. The glass and steel structure solidifies the plaza's prominence as an active destination by surrounding the plaza, including below grade, with spaces for retail, restaurants and rest. The building employs a parti of several distinct rectilinear volumes shifted in relation to one another, which provides a contrast to the monolithic character of adjacent 3 Bryant Park.

Design with Sustainability in Mind

MdeAS repositioned the old Verizon Building into the 3 Bryant Park we know today. We removed the existing glass and white marble façade and stripped the building down to its steel frame. Instead of knocking the building down, we refit the building with a state-of-the-art, high-performance unitized curtain wall system. In an environmentally responsible approach, we recycled the metal of the original façade and the stone was reused in road projects.

New York City’s “Guardians”

The Guardians: Hero and Superhero was designed by Italian architect and designer, Antonio Pio Saracino, as a symbol Italy’s cultural heritage in the United States. One made of marble and the other made of stainless-steel, the sculptures stand 13-feet-high, framing the north and south entrance of the public plaza.

The MdeAS-designed space becomes an extension of Bryant Park by incorporating a variety of landscaping and seating to create a unique place for socialization.
