Designing today’s built environment for tomorrow

With more than 30 years of experience, MdeAS [em/dee/ay/es] is a New York-based Architecture firm known for modern design focusing on the quality of natural materials, intelligent programming, and the redefining of districts, public spaces, buildings, and interiors.

About

MdeAS is led by a collective group of diverse individuals with a common goal of creating architecture that connects people and place. Coming from different cultural and educational backgrounds, each leader brings a unique perspective and skillset to the office. They are advocates for social action, mentors for young designers, and architects of the future.

Founded in 1991 by former Skidmore Owings & Merrill Partners, Leon Moed and Raúl de Armas, Moed de Armas Architects was established to continue the practice of modern architecture. In 1998, the firm expanded with the promotion of Dan Shannon as partner. Featuring a new name, Moed de Armas & Shannon Architects broadened its New York City and international presence with a focus on quality design and innovative architecture. The firm continued to grow with the promotion of Mike Zaborski to principal in 2012 and rebranded as MdeAS Architects in 2014.

While times have changed, our core principles have remained the same. MdeAS is a team of progressive global creators with a passion for designing architecture that makes an impact.

Values

MdeAS’ creative design team draws upon their diverse experiences to foster a culture of professional growth that values creativity, communication, wellness, and respect.

Since our founding, MdeAS is rooted in the architectural philosophy of impactful design. We are passionate designers, innovative thinkers, and team players. The firm has grown to become an internationally-renowned practice of commercial architecture, interior architecture, urban planning, and intelligent programming.

MdeAS designs with climate change, social justice, and cultural impact in mind. Our team members are empowered to make a difference in the communities in which they live and work, by learning, teaching, volunteering, or otherwise helping to make the world a better place.

Sustainability

At MdeAS, we recognize the impact that the building industry has on climate change.

Buildings and construction account for nearly 40% of energy-related carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, while the embodied energy inherent in the built environment is directly linked to deforestation, habitat destruction, and species extinction. We are committed to designing buildings that contribute to a more resilient, self-sustaining future.
