Volunteer Day 2022: GrowNYC

For Volunteer Day 2022, MdeAS took a field trip to Governor's Island to volunteer with GrowNYC. We spent the morning planting strawberries, de-weeding flower beds, and learning about the organization's community gardens.

With more than 150 gardens across the 5 New York City boroughs, GrowNYC envisions a New York in which every New Yorker can flourish. Every garden. Every school. Every street. Every neighborhood. Every borough. We are proud to have helped towards this goal.

Their programs include:

  • Food Access and Agriculture - A network of Greenmarket farmers’ markets, Youthmarkets, fresh food box pick-ups, and Greenmarket Co. ensures that all New Yorkers have access to the freshest, healthiest local food.

  • Conservation - Blanketing the five boroughs with resources like textile and food scrap collection, Stop 'N' Swaps, and free training to make waste reduction easy for all.

  • Green Space - Building and supporting community and school gardens, providing construction expertise, technical assistance, green infrastructure support, school garden grants, and more.

  • Education - Fostering future environmental stewards by providing 70,000 children each year with programs that provide meaningful interactions with the natural environment.
